The performance, despite the obvious reference to the title of the 1987 classic film (which\u00a0 premiered in Poland in the landmark year of 1989), is not its reinterpretation. Instead, it is an\u00a0 autonomous and radical response to the idea of dirty dancing \u2013 as a metaphor for\u00a0 transgression. We are interested in dance understood not as choreography of movement, but\u00a0 as a performative act of going beyond social norms: ethical, aesthetic and emotional. Dirty\u00a0 Dancing is a dance that is impure, shameful, lustful, bothersome \u2013 yet liberating and\u00a0 transformative.<\/p>\n

Together with four performers from M STUDIO, we created a study of individual \u2018embarrassing performances\u2019. Each of the artists has developed their own stage alter ego and a set of actions\u00a0 and gestures balancing on embarrassment, ridicule and pleasure. A key element of the process\u00a0 was guilty pleasure \u2013 understood not as pop culture entertainment, but as the practice of\u00a0 crossing social barriers and testing the boundaries of comfort. We tested what happens when\u00a0 pleasure is no longer burdened by guilt.<\/p>\n

The show explores the political potential of embarrassing performance \u2013 as a strategy of\u00a0 resistance to societal expectations, norms and pressures. We are interested in whether by\u00a0 voluntarily transgressing the boundaries of \u2018good taste\u2019 and convention, it is possible to achieve a new quality of presence \u2013 more authentic, bodily,sensitive to one\u2019s own feelings. In this sense,\u00a0 Dirty Dancing <\/em>is not a performance to be analysed intellectually from a safe distance. It is an\u00a0 event that engages the spectator on a bodily and emotional level, inviting empathy, second hand shame, joint laughter.<\/p>\n

It is also a proposal \u2013 risky but sincere \u2013 to treat one\u2019s own embarrassment as a gateway to\u00a0 freedom.
