2 Steps Forward, 1 Step Back is a blend of dance performance and performance lecture that investigates the relationship between artist, critic, and audience, and what happens when that relationship stops being alive. The starting point is personal, theoretical, and physical: how does criticism shape the body of the performer and inscribe itself into the work? Through archival research and conversations with dance critics and collaborators, the performance took shape as a space where criticism does not arrive after the fact but is present as everything unfolds.
